Your checklist

Before move-in

Do these in the weeks before you get the keys. Lead times for internet and parking are the ones people miss.

Move-in day inspection

Do this before you carry boxes in. Photos with a date are your record of how the place looked on day one.

Living with roommates or family

Agree on money and shared things in writing before the first bill arrives.

First week

Apartment move-in checklist: the day-one steps

The most valuable hour is the one before you unpack. The move-in day inspection section lists what to photograph, test and write down, and it is the same list whether the apartment is new or old. Send the photos and the problems to the landlord the same day, so there is a dated record if the deposit is ever disputed.

  1. Choose your filters. Tell the list whether you live alone or with others, whether the place is furnished, and whether you have a car or pets.
  2. Work through the sections. Start with before move-in, then do the inspection on the day, then the first-week items. Tick each item as you go; your ticks stay in your browser.
  3. Print or download. Print the list or download the PDF to take with you. You do not need an email for the download.

First apartment checklist (printable)

For a first apartment, the shopping is the bigger job. Use the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and cleaning sections and print the list with your filters set to “Essentials only”; switch to “Comfortable” when the basics are in. You do not need to buy everything on day one: a bed, a pot, a pan, two plates, a towel and a lamp will carry you through the first night.

Utilities and renters insurance, in plain words

Landlords differ on what is included in the rent, so ask in writing. Electricity, gas, water and trash may be yours or the building's; internet is nearly always yours. Renters insurance is a separate policy that usually covers your belongings and your liability if something happens in your home; the building's own insurance does not cover your things. Compare a few quotes and read what is covered, because this page is general information and not advice.

Living with roommates

Money is where most roommate disagreements start. The roommate items in the list ask you to agree who pays what, who is on the lease and who owns the shared furniture before the first bill arrives. Put it in a message everybody keeps, so it is not a matter of memory.

Questions people ask

What do I need for my first apartment checklist?

Start with 57 essentials: the lease, utilities and internet booked, renters insurance considered, a bed and sheets, a pot, a pan, plates, a knife, towels, cleaning supplies, a basic tool kit and a first-aid kit. The list above adapts to roommates, furniture, a car and pets, and has a comfortable-budget option for the extras.

What utilities do I need to set up when moving into an apartment?

Usually electricity, internet, and sometimes gas, water, sewer and trash, depending on what the landlord includes in the rent. Ask the building which ones you pay for and who the suppliers are. Electricity can be started in a day or two; internet installs can take a week or more, so book as soon as you know your move-in date.

What should I check on apartment move-in day?

Take dated photos of every room and fill in the condition form before you bring in boxes. Test the smoke alarms, locks, taps, toilets, appliances, heating and outlets, look for pests and leaks, and email the list of problems to the landlord the same day. That record helps when the deposit is settled at the end of the lease.

Do I have to give my email to get the checklist?

No. The checklist, the print button and the PDF download are free and need no email. The email form is optional: if you use it, the PDF still downloads right away and we save your email to send the checklist, and we may send at most one moving-season tip email. You can ask us to delete it at any time.
